ATDNSIN-NORTHSTAR

ATDNSIN (The APA That Dares Now Speak Its Name) and NORTHSTAR are amateur press associations both founded in 1989 and recently merged. This yahoogroup is for its members. The main focus is on sharing comics and comic related entertainment and opinions of interest to LGBT people, but zines can be about anything. The purpose is to connect to like-minded comic readers! Bi-monthly, members send their zines to the central mailer who collates them and sends combined issues out to members all over the country! Membership starts with a membership account with a minimum of $10 and your first zine! (Each member is responsible for keeping their account current to cover cost of mailing APA issues and any common supplies or organization copying).

A great deal of the Gay League members' interaction takes place via its e-mailing lists at Yahoo! Groups. The regular list, called simply the GLA, is a great way to get to know other gay fans through the lively e-mail discussions they hold. Digest delivery or Web Only access cuts down or eliminates e-mail volume for those concerned about excessive messages. Due to some adult content, you must be of legal age in your locality to join.

Founded in 1996, the queercomix mailing list has been a discussion area and "safe space" on the Internet for talk about queer issues in comic books. Anything directly relating to queer concerns in comic books and the comics industry is appropriate for discussion, including in-story and personnel issues. Queer characters, creators, storylines and themes, and even queer-phobic creators, publishers, and/or comic book stories are all discussed regularly by the members.
The queercomix list is not a general-purpose "home base" for queer fans to discuss anything comics related (or even unrelated)—it has a narrower focus, and off-topic discussions are not encouraged. To subscribe send an e-mail to queercomix-subscribe@groups.queernet.org. |

Yuricon was founded in 2001 with the mission of bringing together fans of lesbian images in Japanese animation and comics. This mission has gathered people from all over the world to discuss and create stories that represented an entire continuum of lesbian experience, from youthful crushes to adult relationships. Yuricon has almost 800 members, and ALC Publishing (named after Yuricon's original name, AniLesboCon) is gearing up to release many original and translated projects in 2005.

"Boobs Ahoy!, a newer webcomic created by Chloe Matthews and Lynn McKeown, depicts the swashbuckling adventures of Wilhelm and Clover, two lesbian pirates on the hunt for women and treasure and…more women.
As the title indicates, Boobs Ahoy! is full of silly, sexy fun; its opening page warns it might not be suitable for those under 18. With all the nudity and sexual content, Matthews has said that one of her main concerns about putting the comic online was that the wrong audience would find it, and enjoy it for the wrong reasons. 'I'd hate the idea that I had a part in something that only objectified lesbians,' Matthews said."

 Boy Meets Boy

Boy Meets Boy beat out a host of hetero comics to win the WCC Award for "Outstanding Romantic Comic."

The Boy Scouts don't allow gay men or boys to be scouts, so these comics explore what it might be like if there were a youth group for queer guys. ScooterX is an Eagle Scout and draws from his imagination and his experience. The Boy-Sluts began as a comic created by ScooterX, but like many things, took on a life of its own. Here you'll find sketches and artwork from the comic, links to comic books, and even a Trading Post where you can buy your Official Boy Sluts uniform and gear.

The main theme is Bohemianism, which is the philosphy of life that you need to live for your art and for love, throwing materialistic things out the window. It's a hard life, but somehow our bohemian friends live through it.

Erin Lindsey says her webcomic Venus Envy is basically her way of:
A) Filling a major gap in the online comic community (I mean, let's face it, you've got three dozen comics about lesbians, a hundred and four about clumsy white males, six about talking ferrets, and eight with dead people, but only two other TS comics that I've managed to find), and
B) Working through a lot of the stress and insanity that comes from my life. In a sense, I guess this is therapy (and a lot cheaper, too). I have it up here, online, to try and make people laugh as well as show some people that a transsexual man or woman is no different from any other man and woman and try and make the concept a little less alien to all. |
