Michael Derry, creator of "Troy," will open his first solo art show, "Groovy, Silly, Sexy, Cute," at Grace Ellay in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles on July 19th. Wilson Cruz, of My So-called Life, Noah's Arc and the upcoming He's Just Not That Into You, will host an opening night party with cocktails from 8-11pm. The show will feature Derry's illustrations and paintings, as well as a few of his favorite "Troy" episodes. Copies of Derry's new hardcover… [More…]

FAQUEER: CAN WRITERS GET PORTFOLIO REVIEW AT CONVENTIONS?
Spectrum by Charles "Zan" Christensen, posted July 2nd, 2008
Anyone who's been to a comic book convention has probably seen the long lines of young hopefuls, lined up with their big, black portfolios, waiting to show their work to big-time comic book editors for feedback. How about those of us with a vivid imagination but no drawing hand? Should we just pack up our scripts and some "pitches" in a nice, leather notebook and go stand in line with the rest? [More…]

JUSTIN HALL’S GLAMAZONIA APPEARS IN SPECIAL PRIDE ISSUE OF S.F. BAY GUARDIAN!
News posted July 1st, 2008
In her first appearance since winning Prism Comics’ Queer Press Grant, Justin Hall’s Glamazonia the Uncanny Super Tranny is back in action, this time in her own adventure in the current issue of the San Francisco Bay Guardian as part of it’s special LGBT Pride issue. Glamazonia, being especially full of pride (or is that just shamelessness?), was given a full page of the paper by the vivacious and sassy SFBG editor Marke Bieschke to strut her stuff. Check it out on Justin’s blog or via… [More…]

"QUEEN" KIRBY: HOW I CRACKED THE CODE AND FIGURED OUT THAT JACK KIRBY WAS GAY
Queer Eye on Comics by Kyle Minor, posted June 29th, 2008
Michelangelo! Oscar Wilde! Andy Warhol! Tennessee Williams! Some of the greatest and most influential artists and writers in history, while excelling in their own creative fields, have also excelled in the fields of flower arranging, brunch preparation, and knowing the perfect place for a pre-theater cocktail. That's right -- they were gay! And before you start writing that angry e-mail, yes... I know not everyone of us is good at flower arranging. That is a stereotype. Those folks always have… [More…]

A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR HELPS THE COMIX GO DOWN
Color Commentary by Sean McGrath, posted June 27th, 2008

GAY NO MORE
Spectrum by PKA, posted June 25th, 2008
Most gay comics fans remember the "controversy" that arose when the Rawhide Kid was outed in a 2003 Marvel MAX comic book called "Slap Leather." In this article, Paige and Kevin Alexis take a look at a more recent controversy: the (inadvertent?) re-closeting of the Rawhide Kid in a recent Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Does this incident confirm that RH's foray into homosexuality was just a sales gimmick? [More…]

MARVEL VS DC
Queer Eye on Comics by Mark Phillips, posted June 15th, 2008
Lewis Black's Root of All Evil is a series where two comedians debate on which of two subjects are the biggest drains on our will to live, such as Oprah vs the Catholic Church or Donald Trump vs Viagra. This week, Mark "Comixbear" Phillips uses this format to settle, once and for all, which of the "big two" is most deserving of our scorn. [More…]

A FLAMING GOOD SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK!
Color Commentary by Brian Andersen, posted June 12th, 2008
Flaming Arrow & Pigeon is so much more than its tongue-in-cheek, double-meaning title. The star of this comic, the triumphant Flaming Arrow, is both queer (hence, part one of the “flaming” meaning) and able to create and control a fiery bow and arrow (hence the second, double flamey whammy)! I love that talented creator/writer Tony Smith is able to take a potentially derogatory gay term, like flaming, and turn it into a positive by having his character own and embrace this… [More…]

BRIAN ANDERSEN'S NEW WEBCOMIC UNABASHEDLY BILLIE
News by Scott Anderson, posted June 11th, 2008
Brian Andersen, creator of the indie comic book series So Super Duper—quite possibly the cutest gay comic ever—is offering his latest project, Unabashedly Billie, as a free webcomic. This black and white slice-of-life comic is loosely based on true events in Andersen's life, from coming out, first dates, and his struggles in accepting himself for who he is… instead being unhappy with himself for everything he isn't. [More…]

WE LIVE IN A WORLD OWNED BY ROBERT KIRKMAN
Queer Eye on Comics by Paul Florez, posted June 8th, 2008
Give it up for the first "Queer Eye" article by Prism newbie Paul Florez. Paul's an all-around ace, having interned at Marvel and Wizard and now working for Alyson Books. He's of that younger generation, with a new take on things. Here he interprets for us, the casual use of "gay" by all the youngins, and why we shouldn't wince. Read on! [More…]
